Fisher Tunnel: Three railroad lines run through beautiful Newton State Park. One of these travels through Fisher Tunnel as it follows higher ground. Several campers and hikers have pitched their tents in the piney woods and are enjoying their summer vacation. Newton Ravine: Newton ravine is a box canyon in Newton State Park with a finger of Lake Fig extending into the canyon floor. Vacationers are enjoying themselves by fishing, rock climbing, swimming and exploring. Note the newer bridge in the foreground provides a shorter, more direct route across the canyon than the older bridge behind it. Remember that in parks and nature preserves there are wild animals. Can you see some of them? |
In 1999, one of our club members (Steve "Sir Fig") was becoming bored with the conventional box design of N-Trak modules and started thinking "outside the box." The result was Newton State park, a 12' long diorama consisting of two 6' modules. But what makes the modules unique is that each of them is in the shape of an ogee curve, sliding one foot to the rear on the right side. When the two modules are connected, the effect is a two foot jog in the layout. Once Sir Fig finished the design of the modules' shape, he went one step further and made one of them 18" deep so he could build a deep ravine cutting through the module's center. Next, he abandoned the N-Trak three parallel track format, making the red, yellow and blue lines diverge at one end of the diorama and coming back together at the other end. And lastly, he used Micro-Engineering code-55 track which really looks good as the red and yellow lines traverse the gorge on high bridges. These two modules have non-standard interfaces between them and must always be connected with Fisher Tunnel on the left and Newton Ravine on the right. |
